I'm going to watch the ballet with my girlfriend in January. We are both in are twenties and are looking for something a bit luxurious that compliments going to the ROH but doesn't require a loan to get a room! We are hoping to stay 2 nights.

My husband and I always stay at the K%26amp;K Hotel. It is wonderful.
there's a newish travelodge just round the corner for cheap %26amp; not so cheerful, you should get into the Radisson at seven dials for under 锟?00, St Martins Lane hotel has just been tarted up and would be about 锟?0 more. but if you dont mind a stroll over the river then County Hall (at the london eye/south bank/festi hall) is now a decent value travel inn (from 锟?0 if you book early) and mariott (锟?25ish) - if it were me i'd stay there and enjoy the best view in london, walking over waterloo bridge at night, have fun!

The Paris Opera House is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. It contains levels beyond levels of cellars, fountains, chandeliers and even its own ghost! The history of this performance hall is dark and interesting, and spans from architecture to literature and music.

The cause for this new opera house actually stemmed from Napoleon III.

The House seats two thousand and has seventeen stories, taking up three acres of land. Seven of these are below the ground, and two contain pieces of the famous lake later depicted in Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. Work on this structure began in 1861 and ended fifteen years later. It cost over forty-seven million francs, and gave its creators and workers a massive headache.

Part of the mystique of the opera house is the levels that it inhabits underground. There are chorus rooms, green rooms, ball rooms, set rooms, cellars for waste props, closets, dressing rooms, and many more kinds of rooms making up the building. The underground levels contains all sorts of gruesome objects from various operas that have been produced. Their gruesome effect sparked the idea behind Gaston Leroux's The Phantom of the Opera.

the opera was built by the architect Garnier, and the buyer was the emperor Napoleon III (nephew of the well known Napoleon Ist). the era of Napoleon III is very important in paris: all the "grey-buildings" of paris were built under his reign.

well, Napoleon wanted the Opera to be the greatest building, the mark of his highness.

so... Garnier built the Opera, but the empress Eug茅nie disliked it, cause it was a mix of several styles, and she said "What is THIS ? it's not classical style, not baroque style, nor 'pompier' style..."

and Garnier answered : "Madam, this is Napoleon III style".

and now, the Opera is still known as the major 'napoleon III style' building in Paris.

go to the library. if your local library is too small, find it in the catalogue of another library nearby, and then go and ask for an interlibrary loan.

don't just look at the operatic scores (a lot of libraries won't have full scores), search out books of arias. for example, if looking for "nessun dorma" look in books of italian arias.

if you still can't find it, ask a singer. trust me. i'm an opera singer and i have TONS of music that i loan out to friends.

This is not classical music...try the pop section.
Just because you consider it to be classical music doesn't make it classical music. It's popular music from a musical, not an opera.

And you can find a copy of the score for piano in almost any shop that carries sheet music. You could also ask them if they can order you a copy for strings.

I've been trying to find some for myself and haven't. About two years ago I gave up. The solo books with all the songs aren't too bad, but they aren't in the key in the musical or whatnot. They're easier since musical keys usually have 5/6 flats or sharps, pretty ugly. It's only the medley though, not the background music- the cool stuff really.

I have it, I wont be able to send it to you though. I'm sorry. But I got it at an all around music place, mostly for guitars but they had a lot of piano books. Don't look for it on the internet though because they always put up the wrong stuff. Like I one time tried to look up Stevie Nicks songs on the internet and it was bogus on the "number 1 music sheet website". Go to any store that holds piano stores and look to see if they have the Phantom of the Opera music. And dont go for the "for beginners" or something like that because those arent correct either. I go to several local music stores that sell music; sheet music, books and recorded material. I use music for personal use and limited educational use, (c) law means for personal use. Look up music stores and make some calls and ask if they have it. Since the songs are currently popular and many of my students do them I know they are available. If a store doesn't have it they may be able to order it for you.

Another option is to print good quality color images of the Opera Garnier's interiors to use as your backgrounds. Mount them on foam board, then use small props--a full length mirror, chairs, a gondola, etc.--and red, curtain-like cloth. You could spray paint a small canoe black to make the Phantom's gondola boat. Use another mirror and a bare tree prop with a noose to create the torture chamber. See the official Lloyd-Webber musical site and the Opera Garnier images on Goggle below to get some inspiration and create your backgrounds.

In fact if I were you, I would visit a place that had doll-house furniture in it, and look for wooden things...

Another place that may be good to visit is a place catering to the wedding set, or a floral shop-- they also often have "littles" that represent "bigs."

Years ago I played in a tour ensemble. One of my favorite pieces that we played was Arcangelo Corelli's Concerto Grosso in G minor, Opus 6, Number 8. I've since then lost the sheet music. I recently found a video on YouTube of this piece, and it's inspired me to want to play it again. I've been able to pick most of the cello part back up again by simply watching, but it'd be so much easier to play with music. Does anyone know where I can find the music online? I have no need for a full score for every instrument, so I'd rather not have to purchase it offline.

I have searched all the sheet music websites I can find. I'm looking for a piece just for flute. It has three parts each with a little more ornamentation than the one before. Phantom of the Opera Piano help!!!?

I'm teaching myself to play the Phantom of the Opera on piano, I have the sheet music and all that but I was wondering, do you use the pedal at all? It's not in the sheets but it sounds better to me, especially in the bits with all the chords.

Also, this is hard to explain but I was wondering whether you play the bit where they sing along with the bass.

E.g the treble cleff notes are F and A do you play the D on the bass with those notes or separately.

Again I think it sounds better together but I can't really tell what it says on the music...

I think I may understand what you're saying.

As a general pedaling technique, unless the composer calls for "Smorzando", or if the chords are closely related, you should break upon the coming of every new chord.

Smorzando means dying away. This is where you keep the pedal depressed as you play through multiple harmonic changes, ritard and decrescendo.

Also, if the successive chords are roughly the same, such as a root position Bb major triad and a first inversion major triad (with D as the lowest note), it is okay to keep the pedal depressed (in most contexts).

However, in most situations, I would not keep the pedal depressed when going from one chord to another. For example, going from the I chord to the V chord (like C to G).

Phantom of the Opera, sort of.....?

Does anyone remember the name of a movie that was based loosely on the tale of the Phantom of the Opera? It was on video in the mid-'80s. It's set in a modern day music school and has the added twist of sheet music that's haunted/possessed. I'm think the actor who played Freddie Krugger played the role of the phantom. If anyone remembers the actual name of the movie, could you tell me it and whether or not its been transferred to DVD?

You're right in guessing that the most often attended period was the London Season. The London Season coincided with the sitting of Parliament, and began some time after Christmas, running until lat summer (July/August), when it became too hot, and wealthy city inhabitants took to their Summer homes in the countryside, or on vacations on the continent. They would return by late November, in time for Christmas and the start of the new Season.

The most famous opera house was (and still is) undoubtedly the Royal Opera House at Covent Garden. It's competitor, and almost as equally famous and important is the Theatre Royal at Drury Lane.

Theatre admissions were roughly four shillings for the box seats, two for seats in the pit, and one for the gallery.

I went to see the Phantom of the Opera and at the start when they are selling things from the Paris Opera House, and one of the things the sell are three skulls, I can't work out who the skull's belong to, can anyone tell me please?

It is a reference to the very beginning of the play when they are enacting the sale of the estate by auction. In it they are selling props from one of the "Opera houses" many plays, such as lot 664 "a wooden pistol and 3 human skulls" from a performance of Robert de Diable.

Who else here thinks the book "The Phantom of the Opera" shouldt've have been made into a musical? I like musicals but just because the book mainly takes place in an opera house does not constitute making it a complete musical. I concede thea actors were great ande everything but it was just so... stupid seeing a story like that acted out like a Disney movie with sporadic singing moments. I rented it once and got through an hour of it. (I'm talking the 2004 version btw) but it just started grating on me watching people sing lines that gave me chills when i read the book. I put the subtitles on and started fast forwarding it reading the words of the songs. That didn't last long obviously. Like I said before, I like musicals, I like Cats and one I don't know the title of but is about New York but you don't adapt a book to a musical, cats wasn't a book before the musical. Also, Erik has little hair so why do i see "pretty boys" with full hair playing his part?

You're right, the musical shouldn't have been made into a movie. I never saw the stage version of the musical, but everyone that did said it was amazing. I had the soundtrack when I was in highschool and I really enjoyed it. I think the stage is probably a better medium for the musical than the big screen. The movie was kinda cheesy at points. Visually the movie was stunning, and the acting was goo too, it was just those moments of breaking into song that ruined the somber and romantic mood and took it to the cheesy Disney level.
